Naan (Indian flatbread)

If you’ve ever eaten at an Indian restaurant, you may have eaten a bread called naan. Nowadays you can buy ready-made naan in grocery stores. It’s pretty pricey so I figured it’s about time I learned how to make it. Naan is not a bread that Indians generally make at home because it is made in a tandoor oven which is commonly made out of clay and is super hot! At homes, Indians make breads known as chapathis or rotis. (Let’s leave that recipe for another day). Today, we’re focusing on how to make naan at home.

Here is a recipe I’ve tried that has turned out great:

(He’s pretty entertaining.)

Note:

  • I like seeing the bubbles pop up and get brown so I take a wire baking rack and move it around above my stove. It’s worked welll with gas and electric. You just need to be careful not to burn yourself! I like the look of this naan better than baking it in the oven.
  • Naan is best eaten immediately. Because it’s made with white flour, it gets tough and chewy real fast.
